On Time

I love the new year. I get the cynical view that by January 19, most of us will cast off our ambitious resolutions, but there’s no greater chance to achieve big things than with a strong start. So we start!

It’s just one thing in 2023: to be on time. Not to “try to be on time more,” but to be a person who knows the value of my own time and others’, choose the right commitments, and show up for them, knowing that there will always be more opportunities I’m interested in, than hours available to achieve them.

This isn’t about punctuality, really. And it’s not a problem because I’m “so busy.” We’re all busy. Being on time is saying to each person “I’m very clear about how I’m going to spend my energy today. You’re an important part of that, and I’m grateful to share it with you. So I’ll be here on time, prepared, and ready to do something amazing together.”

This little goal is sneaky-tough, at least for me. It will take a complete rethink of how I currently operate, honestly. But if there is no more precious resource than our time (and I believe that to be true), then I don’t waste another minute apologizing for being late.
